Lossiemouth made the trek north to face Wick Academy at Harmsworth Park this weekend and, bar a controversial last minute penalty, would have come back with all three points. Instead the Coasters had to settle for a share of the points, which was probably a fair result, as Wick were on top for long spells but failed to take their chances. Playing
up the slope in the first half, Lossies starting line up featured Tony
Ross, playing his first game for the club, and the visitors were on the
offensive from the first whistle. Craig Morrison curled a free kick
towards goal, but the ball dipped just wide of the post. Lossie
scored the opening goal of the game just shy of quarter of an hour in. A
long ball downfield from McMullan dropped onto the
edge of the box and rolled towards MacMillan in goal, only for one of his
defenders to run into him and cause the ball to break free. Doug COULL
pounced to round the Wick pair and slot home from a tight angle. Wick
would have been level five minutes later had it not been for a great save
from Dunn, who reacted well to palm away a shot from twelve yards from
Mark Nichol. The home side were presented with a free kick just outside
the box soon after, and Gary Farquhar squared the ball to Nigel Mackenzie,
only for him to fire wide. Craig
Morrison was next to try his luck in front of goal, and MacMillan did well
to turn his shot around the post to safety on the half hour. Moments
later, McIntosh produced a driving run through the middle of the park
before choosing to shoot, despite an unmarked Morrison on his left. The
shot was blocked and the ball eventually fell to Mo, but he could only
shoot over. Half time - Wick Academy 1
Lossiemouth 1 Twenty
minutes in and a collision between Ellis and MacMillan saw the game
delayed for a few minutes for the veteran keeper to receive treatment. A
chip over the defence saw the two race to be first to the ball a dozen
yards out, only for them to hit each other. Despite the protestations of
the home side, it looked like a genuine attempt at the ball by Ellis, and
the referee agreed. Midway
through the half and everyone in the ground thought Lossie had taken the
lead when Coull headed goalward from only a few yards out. Miraculously
the ball flew wide, but it was not long before the former Lossie Utd
player got on the score sheet again. Ellis chipped a quickly taken free
kick into the box and, with the home side still sorting out a wall, COULL
leapt like a salmon above a stationary defence to head home to the far
post. Wick
were now looking like losing a game they deserved no less than a point
from, and the second goal saw Lossie tighten things up and restrict Wick
to long range efforts, including one which went out for a throw. Full time - Wick Academy 2 Lossiemouth 2 |
