Lossiemouth v Inverurie Locos @ Grant Park, Lossiemouth

11-Mar-2006 Lossiemouth v Inverurie Locos - Scot-Ads Highland League

Lossie suffered at the hands of Inverurie Locos for the second time this season, and as a result slip down a place in the Scot-Ads Highland League. The visitors scored two goals in either half to secure a 4-0 victory, and Lossie can have no complaints about the scoreline after a poor afternoon at the office.

The home side started the game playing into a strong wind and early on it was obvious that the weather was going to cause problems. Lossie struggled to get the ball out of their half for long spells, allowing Locos the luxury of playing higher up the park and keeping Steve Dunns goal under siege.

Lossie did produce the opening chance through Craig Morrison. The former New Elgin man chased onto a loose ball from the halfway line but his sprint towards goal was halted on the edge of the box. Locos were next to try their luck but Mark Simpson could only fire over.

The visitors took the lead on 17 minutes and it was a return to the sloppy defending of old for Lossie. A Neil McLean throw in flew into the box and Craig Ross headed down for Stuart MCKAY to fire home from close range to the delight of McLean, whose physical celebration in front of the Lossie fans did him no favours.

Immediately after Lossie went in search of an equaliser, and Morrison had the chance to level but could only shoot into the hands of Gray from a dozen yards.

The wind was still causing problems, particularly for Dunn who saw one of his goal kicks fly go no further than Craig Ross. Ross passed quickly to Coull but with the goal gaping, the Locos front man put his shot wide to the amusement of the home support.

Locos went further ahead just before the half hour, when Park swung a cross into the box and ROSS met it with a powerful header to leave Dunn with no chance. Although Lossie had already produced a stunning comeback from two goals down against Locos earlier this season, you got the feeling a repeat of such was unlikely this time round.

Half time - Lossiemouth 0 Inverurie Locos 2

As expected, Lossie made a better start to the second half, finding it easier to operate with the wind at their backs, but even half chances were still rare. Locos went close to adding a third minutes into the half but Dunn produced a fine save to prevent Ross grabbing a second.

On the hour, Morrison raced through to try and connect with a Whyte pass over the top but was beaten to the ball by Gray. Minutes later the home side tried the same trick and almost pulled one back when Morrison won the ball and chipped Gray from the edge of the box, only to see the ball cleared off the line.

Locos decided to put the game to bed shortly after and former Elgin City man Neil MCLEAN drilled home a pass from McKay, although David Hendry appeared to have been fouled at least twice in the build up.

It was 4-0 five minutes from time as Locos were awarded a soft penalty. Gary Youngson appeared to have a handful of Ross’ shirt and the goalscorer promptly hit the deck to see his side awarded with a spot kick. Scott BUCHAN stepped up to beat Dunn and put a lid on a solid afternoon for the visitors.

Lossie now have a lot of work to do before the game against Fort William on Saturday week. Craig Morrisons booking rules him out of the cup-tie, so a watertight defence will be required as goals are likely to be a premium for a side now missing their two top scorers.
